CHAPTER RESIDENT ADVISOR

Job Description

The Live-In Chapter Resident Advisor for the Gamma Lambda Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity is charged with assisting chapter leadership with chapter development and goal setting, individual counseling of students in all areas of personal and educational development, and coordinating maintenance and management of the chapter house.  The advisor functions as a counselor, mentor, and resource for individual brothers, chapter leadership, and the greater chapter. This position requires a proactive interest, effort, and dedication to the personal growth and leadership development of young men.

Terms of Appointment

The Gamma Lambda Alumni Corporation appoints the Chapter Resident Advisor for a one-year term with the option for renewal the second year. Upon acceptance, the Chapter Resident Advisor shall move in no later than August 15, 2006, with training from the Alumni Corporation to begin that week.

Living Arrangement and Compensation

  • Unfurnished one bedroom apartment, including separate living area, bedroom, private bathroom, and access to community kitchen (advisor apartment is on the main floor, brothers have rooms in the basement and 2nd floors of the house)
  • Food is provided free of charge (the Chapter employs a cook for the undergraduates as well as the advisor)
    • Meals include lunch and dinner Mon-Thurs, and brunch on Friday, cereal, milk/OJ, fruit and snacks are always at hand
  • Room and board will be at no cost to the advisor as compensation for performing the duties listed in the agreement below
    • Room includes cable, internet, and utilities
  • Free parking spot at the chapter house

Responsibilities

Undergraduate Chapter

  • Serve as mentor and counselor to undergraduate members
    • Provide individual guidance for brothers who come to the advisor with problems
    • Provide group guidance to run more efficient meetings and better activities
  • Leadership consulting to improve chapter operations
    • Evaluate Executive Board and give advice for general improvements
    • Work closely with the executive officers
    • Review the chapter’s financial data with the Treasurer regularly and review quarterly budgets
    • Assist with the officer transition for the undergraduate chapter officers through conducting exit interviews
    • Facilitate educational programs and workshops as requested by the chapter
    • Assist the chapter leadership to identify facilitators for educational workshops
  • Attend chapter functions
    • Attend weekly chapter dinners, which are held Sunday’s at 6:00 p.m.
    • Attend weekly chapter meetings, which are held Sunday’s at 7:00 p.m.
    • Attend weekly Executive Board meetings
    • Attend the formal ritual and initiation ceremonies of the chapter, if an initiated brother of Theta Chi
    • Attend irregular committee meetings when requested or as needed

Greek Life/Campus Relations

  • Serve as the liaison between Theta Chi and the Office of Campus Activities
    • Meet with the University of Denver Assistant Director of Campus Activities at least once a quarter to maintain a positive relationship with University officials and discuss the chapter’s status
    • Communicate to the chapter about activities, events, and other pertinent information about the Office of Campus Activities or the opportunities it affords
    • Help to maintain clear and consistent communication
  • Facilitate the maintenance of the chapter house
    • Work with the Alumni Corporation, chapter members, and University in setting and maintaining house standards and
    • Assist in safety inspections and follow up on University repairs and maintenance in coordination with undergraduate House Manager
    • Serve as a resource for organization of house cleaning and training on house maintenance
    • Help officers coordinate procedures for move in and move out including: room inspections, key distribution, signing of University and Fraternity housing contracts, and education on guidelines
    • Serve a liaison between the cooking staff and the chapter to help provide feedback on meal planning and quality

Alumni

  • Attend monthly Alumni Corporation meetings
  • Work closely with Alumni Corporation
    • Communicate any issues or concern to the Alumni Corporation
    • Help to facilitate communication between undergraduate members and the alumni of Theta Chi in coordination with the undergraduate alumni relations officer
    • Take part in periodic evaluations of the advisor and the chapter as performed by the Alumni Corporation

International Headquarters

  • Ensure that the chapter submits all required forms and fees to the International Headquarters on time each quarter
  • Meet with Leadership and Education Consultants (LEC) during their yearly visit with the chapter to provide accurate assessment on chapter progress
  • Attend either a regional or national conference when possible if desired
  • Meet quarterly with Regional Theta Chi Advisor
