General Questions
Joining and Becoming a New Member
What is a "new member"?
A new member is a student who has accepted a bid from the fraternity and has taken the first step toward full membership. In the past, new members have been referred to as "pledges," but we have recently shifted away from that language.
Will my son be hazed?
Absolutely not. Hazing is a detriment to a chapter and tears away at the possibilities of creating bonds of brotherhood. Hazing prevents thousands of men from joining fraternities each year across the nation. We as a brotherhood are committed to upholding D.U. recruitment policies, which specifically outlaw hazing. Fore more information, click here to view the Hazing Policy, which we steadfastly live by.
What is your fraternities stance on alcohol?
Our housing facility is an alcohol- and drug-free environment. In addition, we believe strongly in education about the consequences of binge-drinking and drug use and have designed awareness workshops around furthering our understanding of these topics on today's college man.
What does it mean when my son signs his "bid"?
A "bid" is an official offer to join the fraternity as a new member. When your son signs a bid that has been offered to him, it is an opportunity for him spend the rest of the quarter learning about Theta Chi through our weekly education process. Your son will get a “Big Brother” to assist him and can find out if Theta Chi is right for him.
What is the time commitment?
Chapter meetings are on Sunday nights at 7:00 PM, but as always, the more you put in, the more you will get out. We have exciting events planned every quarter, such as intramural sports, bar parties, exchanges with sororities, and our yearly formal in the mountains, among many other exciting activities!
What is a "legacy"?
A legacy is a man whose grandfather, father, brother or uncle is an alumnus or active member of the fraternity. A fraternity is not obligated to pledge a legacy, and a rushee is completely free to choose the fraternity of his individual preference.

Will my son's involvement in Theta Chi take away from his studies?
Absolutely not. Theta Chi promotes good study habits. We are dedicated to scholarship and are proud to boast the highest G.P.A. among men’s fraternities. Upon joining Theta Chi, many brothers experience a rise in their G.P.A. because of the focus we place on the primacy of scholarship.

Chapter House Living
Is it true that the fraternity house is alcohol free? What does this mean?
Alcohol-free housing (AFH) is defined by most organizations, including ours, as no alcoholic beverages in the chapter house, lodge, residence hall floor, facility, or within the confines of the property at all times. This allows alcohol to be used at events that are held at locations other than those noted above.
Alcohol-free housing is among the most significant changes occurring in men’s national fraternities. Because of this, we are able to keep our insurance rates down and thus lessen the burden on you and your son with lower dues. We greatly respect our house and want to keep it a safe and livable place for all to feel comfortable in. We take pride in the cleanliness of our house.
How much is rent?
The price of rent is set by the university and is congruent with For the 2004-2005 academic year, rent was $1434 per quarter.
Will my son's housing scholarship apply if he lives in the fraternity house?
Yes! We encourage all sophomores to have the amazing experience of living in the house at a very inexpensive price compared to other market rates.
Is the price of dues reduced if my son decides to live in the house?
Yes, quarterly dues are $275 per quarter instead of $300 for brother's living in the house.
